Ongoing and upcoming work

The Bonaventure Expressway is being reconfigured for the benefit of the community. While the expressway is being turned into a boulevard, work will also be done in three adjacent sectors to preserve and uphold the safety of infrastructure in this area.

Sector of the Île des Sœurs Bypass Bridge

Opened to traffic in 2014, the Île des Sœurs Bypass Bridge was a temporary structure used as a bypass route while the new Île des Sœurs Bridge was being built for the construction of the Samuel De Champlain Bridge.

Work description

The work involves deconstructing this temporary structure. A material reuse program has also been included in the project. Some structural components, such as 24 steel girders, will be kept and reused for other infrastructure projects.

Schedule

October 2023 to December 2024

Impact on traffic

As the bypass bridge was disconnected from the road network in 2018, no major impacts on traffic are expected.

Elevated lanes

The federal section of the Bonaventure Expressway’s elevated lanes extends from the Victoria Bridge to the Peel Basin. The section from the Peel Basin to Wellington Street is managed by the City of Montréal.

Work description

The work consists of repairing the concrete slab on a portion of the deck and adding a higher-performance waterproofing membrane.

To improve the structure’s service life, the mini-pier caps will also be removed and replaced with systems that are more effective and easier to maintain.

Global Schedule of the project

May 2024 to December 2025

Impact on traffic from May to November 2024

Major traffic hindrances for this project will include the reconfiguration of lanes in both directions: 2 out of 3 lanes will remain open at all times.

Exit 3 toward the Samuel De Champlain Bridge will be closed for three months (in spring 2024), and the Bonaventure Expressway will be completely closed over 6 weekends.

Detour routes will be set up and communicated to users right before the work starts.

Clément Bridge sector

The Samuel De Champlain Bridge (Hwy. 15 South) and the northern point of Île des Sœurs are linked to the Bonaventure Expressway through road structures that include the Clément Bridge. This bridge spans a branch of the St. Lawrence River at the northern point of Île des Sœurs to then meet up with the Bonaventure Expressway. Built in 1966, this aging infrastructure requires work to remain functional.

Work description

The girders of the Clément Bridge will be repaired, and the bridge’s drainage system will be cleaned.

The road surface will also be levelled and paved.

Work will be done on the approach lanes to repair the concrete surfaces, replace bearings, touch up paint, and improve the drainage system.

The overhead signage and streetlights in this sector will also be replaced.

Global Schedule of the project

July 2024 to December 2025

Impact on traffic from June to November 2024

Major hindrances are expected toward the Samuel De Champlain Bridge (June to August 2024) involving the complete closure of the Expy. at Exit 4, for 52 days.

Also, toward downtown (August to November 2024), some hindrances are expected involving the closure of 1 out of 2 lanes on the Clément Bridge and the complete closure of the Île des Soeurs entrances to the Expy., for 75 days.

Detour routes will be set up on Agétan-Laberge blvd. and communicated to users right before the work starts.
