BOMA Québec presentation | The original Champlain Bridge: from maintenance to deconstruction

This Thursday, February11, Vincent Guimont-Hébert, Eng., MBA, EMBA, Department Head, Environment and Sustainable Development at JCCBI, and Guillaume Saulnier, Eng., PMP, Senior Project Coordinator, Champlain Projects, gave an online talk as part of the BOMA Quebec webinar series.

Their presentation on “The Original Champlain Bridge: From Maintenance to Deconstruction” highlighted the challenges of managing a bridge at the end of its service life, which requires a great deal of know-how and innovation.

A Quebec first for a structure of this magnitude, this vast deconstruction project has also led to many benefits stemming from sustainable development principles.

Mr. Guimont-Hébert and Mr. Saulnier discussed the incredible challenge of reusing the 250,000 tonnes of concrete, 25,000 tonnes of steel, and 12,000 tonnes of asphalt from the old bridge. JCCBI has also implemented a greenhouse gas (GHG) offset program along with a fish habitat and wetland compensation project, which it launched in Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola in the summer of 2020.
