Longueuil, April 13, 2021 – Today, The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) is pleased to report on its first season of winter operations of the Jacques Cartier Bridge multipurpose path and sidewalk. During the 91 days between December 18, 2020 and March 18, 2021, a total of 14,034 trips were taken on the multipurpose path: 6987 trips were made by cyclists (49%) and 7049 trips were made by pedestrians (51%), for an average of 154 trips per day for both work and leisure.

During the winter period, the multipurpose path and sidewalk were accessible from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., conditions permitting. Between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., JCCBI’s teams performed preventive maintenance to minimize closures during operating hours. There were therefore only four closures during operating hours for maintenance.

“JCCBI is working on different projects to enhance its active mobility network, and winter operations on the Jacques Cartier Bridge are an important step in this direction. This first season turned out very well, and we are very proud of the work that our teams did to implement effective and safe maintenance and communication protocols for users,” said Sandra Martel, JCCBI’s Chief Executive Officer. “Beyond the conditions of the path and sidewalk, we want to acknowledge the contribution of users, who adopted courteous and safe behaviour to also help this first season go as well as it did,” she added.

Note that JCCBI has created tools dedicated to active mobility: for example, users can subscribe and receive email alerts about closures and follow us on our @mobiliteactive Twitter account. Before using the path or sidewalk, users should consult the Active Mobility Live Network page on JCCBI’s website, which indicates whether the path and sidewalk are open or closed.
