In partnership with three members of JCBBI’s Operations and Maintenance team, two beekeepers visited the Estacade (located very close to the original Champlain Bridge) in early September 2022 to collect a colony of bees that had taken up residence on top of a pier of this active mobility structure.
The goal was to protect people who use this structure’s bicycle path while preserving these highly useful pollinators. The operation went very well, as the bees almost immediately flew to the cardboard hives made by the beekeepers to transport them.
The hundreds of insects were then moved to a park in Montreal and introduced to a new hive, where they can now go about their business without endangering nearby users or residents.
