Winter-maintenance pilot project of the Jacques Cartier Bridge multipurpose path

As we are sensitive to the increasing demand for a safe year-round corridor for active transportation between Montreal and the South Shore, JCCBI conducted a pilot winter maintenance project in winter 2017-2018 on the Jacques Cartier Bridge multipurpose path.

The goal of the pilot project was to identify and analyze a number of issues related to the path’s winter maintenance in order to address them. JCCBI hired an engineering firm that conducted analyses and tested various deicing products and maintenance methods last winter. The goal of this pilot project was not only to test their performance on the path in diverse weather conditions but also to evaluate their impact on the bridge’s lifespan.

After a thorough analysis of organic and chemical deicing products and conventional and unconventional snow removal methods available on the market, JCCBI chose the following products for the pilot testing:  

  • Organic deicers
    • Beet juice / Corn
    • Wood chips (antislip/traction)
  • Chemical deicers (deicing salts)
    • Magnesium chloride
    • Calcium chloride
  • Conventional snow removal methods (mechanical)
  • Unconventional snow removal methods (snow-melting mat and heated membrane)

Some deicing products were ruled out mainly because of their potential to deteriorate the bridge structure, their volatility on a windy surface, or their inconclusive ability to melt ice on the multipurpose path.

For the pilot winter maintenance project, JCCBI also offered a shuttle service between Montreal and the South Shore for three months.
