Intern, Environment and Sustainability Department

Winter 2021 internship position at a unionized workplace – 37.5 hrs./week

Hourly pay between $16.50 and $20.50, depending on the candidate’s scholarship and experience

Length of internship: 4 months / exact dates to be confirmed

As a manager of important infrastructure, The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (the Corporation) is a federal Crown corporation established in 1978 that is responsible for the Jacques Cartier Bridge, the Champlain Bridge, the Champlain Bridge Ice Control Structure, the Île des Soeurs Bypass Bridge, the federal sections of Bonaventure Expressway and the Honoré Mercier Bridge, as well as the Melocheville Tunnel.

Every day, the Corporation ensures a safe drive for thousands of users by managing, maintaining and repairing this important infrastructure for Greater Montreal. The Corporation also ensures that these critical structures remain safe, fully functional and aesthetically pleasing both today and in the future. It conducts construction, rehabilitation and reinforcement projects on the infrastructure under its responsibility and oversees the operation and maintenance of these structures.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of an environmental specialist, the intern will provide technical support for projects of the Environment and Sustainability Department, such as:

  • The hydraulic barrier project in the west sector and the containment system in the east sector of the Bonaventure Expressway.
  • Environmental site assessment.
  • Development of an environmental management system.
  • Monitoring of environmental liabilities.

For these projects, you may be asked to perform the following tasks: 

  • Monitor work;
  • Prepare terms of reference;
  • Attend meetings;
  • Make on-site visits;
  • Coordinate with stakeholders;
  • Document project progress;
  • Draft reports or other technical documents.

You will also be asked to document, create and develop environmental monitoring processes related to project-based management to establish a system to monitor environmental performance indicators for the Corporation’s different departments:

  • Ensure that the different project registers are up to date;
  • Coordinate activities related to project risk management;
  • Participate in the development of project management processes;
  • Attend project meetings and track deliverables;
  • Read and comment on the monthly progress report on construction and engineering contracts;
  • Assist project coordinators in engineering and construction meetings and compile lessons learned;
  • Work closely with the Corporation’s partners;
  • Perform any other job-related tasks and duties.

REQUIREMENTS 

  • University program in science or engineering with a specialization in environment;
  • Be a self-starter and be independent and proactive;
  • Have a valid driver’s licence;
  • Have good written and oral communication skills in French and English;
  • Knowledge of the following software: Excel, Word, Project, Outlook and Internet Explorer;
  • Certification – Health and Safety on Construction Sites (asset);
  • Certification – WHMIS (asset).
