Longueuil, January 20, 2022 – This morning, The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) held its Annual Public Meeting to review its activities and financial results for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. During this period, JCCBI invested $191.9 million in major projects on the infrastructure it manages, including the original Champlain Bridge, whose deconstruction began in 2020.
“This past fiscal year, our executive team fulfilled its mission of managing multiple major structures while upholding the safety and longevity of our infrastructure and safely getting users where they need to go. We are satisfied with the outcome of this fiscal year, especially against the backdrop of the pandemic, and I thank the entire team for these results,” said Catherine Lavoie, Chair of JCCBI’s Board of Directors.

Overview of main activities
Fiscal year 2020-2021 was marked by the start of the deconstruction of the original Champlain Bridge. On June 29, 2020, JCCBI announced the signing of the design-build contract with Nouvel Horizon Saint-Laurent G.P. (NHSL) made up of Pomerleau Inc. and Delsan-A.I.M. Environmental Services Inc. On July 2020, the deconstruction project started up alongside the deployment of environmental protection measures, materials recovery, and ten research and development projects.
Work on the Jacques Cartier Bridge included the continuation of the steel repair and paint system replacement program on the superstructure, completed repair work to the pedestals (Montreal sector) and concrete abutment (Longueuil sector), and completed repairs to the pavement on the bridge deck. Work continued in order to manage drainage water and develop the land under the bridge (Montreal sector).
The past fiscal year also included the first season of winter operations on the Jacques Cartier Bridge multipurpose path and sidewalk, which is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., from December 18, 2020 to March 18, 2021. To minimize closures during operating hours, preventive maintenance of the surfaces was done at night.
On the Honoré Mercier Bridge, work was carried out to repair the piers, replace the paint system on part of the steel structure, and replace a section of the gangways for inspection work. Prefeasibility studies also continued particularly for repairs to the road surface at the bridge approaches, the connection of the multipurpose path to the municipal network, and the creation of a memorial pathway. A prefeasibility study also started on how to increase the service level on the multipurpose path.
On the Bonaventure Expressway, various repairs were done to the structures of the elevated lanes and pavement on the non-elevated lanes.
