Construction of the bridge begins en 1957. The National Harbours Board was put in charge of the project. At first, the bridge was called the “Nun’s Island Bridge” as it crossed over Île Saint-Paul.

In 1958, the official name “Champlain Bridge” is given in honour of Samuel de Champlain, founder of Québec City in 1608.

The first ship passed through the St. Lawrence Seaway on April 25, 1959. Overhead, the main span of the original Champlain Bridge was already under construction.
